Ben L. Crawford, age 90, of Shannon, GA, passed away Friday, January 3, 2020.

Mr. Crawford was born in Knoxville, TN on January 29, 1929, son of the late Leon and Louise Humbard Crawford. He graduated from Central High School in Chattanooga, TN, where he was a football standout.

Mr. Crawford leaves behind a daughter, Karen Lee, of Rome, GA, and a sister, Martha Slack, brother-in-law, Bill Slack, Athens, niece, Jennifer Amos, Athens, nephew, Wes Popiel, Thomasville, GA, niece, Denise Stinnett of Knoxville, TN, sister-in-law, Harriett Witt and brother-in-law, Andrew Witt, Chattanooga, as well as other nieces and nephews. Mr. Crawford was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Witt Crawford and grandson, Paul Kevin Lee.

Mr. Crawford was a member of the Rome Mineral Society for 50 years where he served in many capacities as well as president and historian, He was on the education staff and a vital part of the Weinman Mineral Museum with exhibits and demonstrations lending his knowledge and expertise while winning many awards. He worked with the Young Scholars Program and many schools inspiring and educating young people with his knowledge of minerals, gem faceting and carving. Mr. Crawford taught geology classes at Shorter College when needed in this capacity and was a master soap-stone carver leaving behind over 29 marine life carvings to be donated to an aquarium in his name. upon retirement, Mr. Crawford was a volunteer with Mercy Senior Care. He served in the United States Naval Reserves.

At his request, Mr. Crawford was cremated, and a Life Celebration will be announced at a later date.
