Carrell Ben Phillips, age 89, of 1584 Morrison Camp Ground Road, Rome (The Johnson Community) died Friday morning, October 9th, 2009, in a local hospital.
A native of Valley Head, Alabama, Mr. Phillips was born on March 29th, 1920, the son of the late Benjamin A. and Malinda Jane Humble Phillips. He had spent the greater part of his life in Floyd County and was a member of the Sunny Side Baptist Church. He had served the church for over 30 years as Chairman of the Deacon Board and also for a number of years as Treasurer. Mr. Phillips was a graduate of Valley Head High School and attended Jacksonville State University. He was an Atlanta Braves fan and enjoyed working in his garden. Mr. Phillips was a World War II veteran having served in the United States Army. Prior to his retirement in 1982 he was associated with General Electric for 30 years and was a member of the General Electric Retirees Association. In addition to his parents, Mr. Phillips was preceded in death by 4grandchildren, 5 brothers and 4 sisters. Mr. Phillips was married on December 28th, 1944 to Lorene McAbee Phillips who preceded him in death on November 19th, 2003.
Mr. Phillips is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Marvin Jackson of Rome; 3 sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Mary Barney Phillips, and Randy Ben and Joyce Phillips all of Rome, and Steve and Joy Phillips of Dover, Kentucky. 7 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services for Carrell Ben Phillips will be held on Tuesday afternoon, October 13th, 2009, at 2 o'clock from the Parkview Chapel of Fred Talley's Funeral Home with the Rev. Max Carver, Rev. Marvin Jackson and Rev. Chyanne Russell officiating. Interment will follow in the family lot of Oaknoll Memorial Gardens with the Honor Guard of the Shanklin-Attaway Post #5 of the American Legion conducting military rites.
Mr. Phillips will remain at Fred Talley's Parkview Chapel where the family will receive friends on Monday evening from 6 until 9 o'clock. At other hours they will be at the residence.
The following will service as active pallbearers, Scott Phillips, Kenneth Phillips, Peyton Phillips, Dakota Phillips, Tacoma Phillips and Jerry Phillips. Honorary pallbearers include Dallas Kerce, Houston Farmer, Jimmy Kerce and Bill Satterwhite and General Electric retires.
