Clifford Lawson Thompson

Clifford L. Thompson, age 87, of #84 Hatfield Road NE, Rome, died early Tuesday morning, February 9th, 2010 at a local hospital.
A native of Floyd County, Georgia, Mr. Thompson was born on February 26th, 1922 the son of the late Crawford and Kate Bohannon Thompson. He was a World War II veteran having served in the United States Army and was a member of the New Armuchee Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Ben Morton Sunday School Class and the J.O.Y. Club. Mr. Thompson was associated with Celanese for 30 years and prior to his retirement, he was associated with Bekaert of Rome for 10 years.
Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Cowart Thompson to whom he was married on June 28th, 1947; a daughter, Shirley Boyd of Rome; a son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Pat Thompson of Rome; 5 grandchildren, Paula Cummings, Cherie Boyd, Kyle Thompson, Natalie Hawkins and Cory Thompson, 10 great-grandchildren also survive as do nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Clifford L. Thompson will be held on Thursday afternoon, February 11th, 2010 at 2 o'clock at the New Armuchee Baptist Church with the Rev. Edward E. Holsomback officiating. Interment will follow in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens with the Brown-Wright Post #12 American Legion Honor Guard conducting military graveside rites. Mr. Thompson will lie-in-state at the church on Thursday from 1 until 2 o'clock.
Mr. Thompson will remain at Fred Talley's Parkview Chapel where the family will receive friends this (Wednesday) evening from 6 until 8 o'clock. At other hours they will be at the residence.
The following will serve as active pallbearers, Lawson Sims, Justin Hawkins, Bobby Cowart, Dean Cowart, Steve Cowart, Kyle Thompson and Cory Thompson. Members of the J.O.Y. Club will serve as honorary pallbearers.
