Ernest Chambers

April 16, 1921 — February 20, 2013

Ernest Chambers, age 91, of 1967 Old Summerville Road, NW, Rome, GA. passed away on Wednesday evening, February 20, 2013 at his residence.

A native of Floyd County, Mr. Chambers was born on April 16, 1921, the son of the late Paul and Estelle Hice Chambers. He was a 1939 graduate of Model High School and was a veteran of World War II having served in the United States Army and was awarded the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars and the Good Conduct Medal. For many years Mr. Chambers was associated with the Atlanta Transit Department (now Marta) and was a retired supervisor from the Cobb County Water Department in Marietta. Mr. Chambers was a member of the New Armuchee Baptist Church where he was a member of the Single Purpose Sunday School Class and was a member of the J.O.Y. Club. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Dobbs Chambers on July 14, 1979 and by a daughter, Tina Puett in March of 2011.

Survivors include his wife, Dorris Dobbs Chambers to whom he was married on June 9, 1991; a daughter and son-in-law, Pat and Grady Smith of Hiram, GA. 3 grandchildren, Melody Carver (Joe) of Dallas, GA., Tricia Orton (Phil) of Acworth, GA. and Alan Puett (Stacie) of El Paso, Texas. 5 great-grandchildren also survive as do a step-daughter, Charlotte Elliott of Armuchee, 1 sister, Elizabeth Mathis of Rome; caregiver, Mary Crews of Summerville, GA. Nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services for Ernest Chambers will be held on Saturday afternoon, February 23, 2013 at 2 o'clock from the Parkview Chapel of Fred Talley's Funeral Home with the Reverend Ray Vaughn officiating. Entombment will follow in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens Mausoleum with Shanklin-Attaway Post #5, American Legion Honor Guard conducting military honors.

Active pallbearers include, Buck Dempsey, Malcolm Talley, Grady Smith, Christopher Carver, Joe Carver and Phil Orton. Members of the J.O.Y. Club are asked to serve as honorary pallbearers.

Mr. Chambers will remain at Fred Talley's Parkview Chapel Funeral Home where the family will receive friends on Saturday afternoon from 1 until 2 o'clock. At other hours the family will be at the residence.

Flowers will be accepted or memorial contribution may be made to the J.O.Y. Club, C/O New Armuchee Baptist Church, P.O. Box 37, Armuchee, Georgia 30105.
