Herbert Luther Davis

Herbert Luther Davis, age 80, of Rome went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, May15th, 2010 after a short illness.

A native of Floyd County, Mr. Davis was born on August 15th, 1929, the son of the late William Edgar and Lona Mae Stevens Davis. Mr. Davis joined the United States Marine Corps Reserve in 1946 and was called to active duty in September 1950 serving his beloved country during the Korean War as one of the Greatest Generation. He retired from General Electric after 38 years of loyal service in 1992. He coached Little League Baseball for many years. He was a very active member of Shorter Avenue Baptist Church where he faithfully sang in the choir and was a dedicated member of the Men's Faith Bible Sunday School Class. He willingly volunteered every week for many years at the Floyd Baptist Association food pantry. Mr. Davis was a member of the Shanklin-Attaway Post #5 American Legion, the Marine Corps League Jake Puryear Detachment #1020 of Rome. He was active in the Toys for Tots.

Mr. Davis is survived by his loving wife, Bette, to whom he was married for 59 years on February 22nd, 1951; He is also survived by their 2 devoted sons: Jeff (Dawn) Davis of Grayson, GA. and Cliff (Susan) Davis of Jacksonville, Fla. He is also survived by 3 precious grandchildren, Melody and Scott of Jacksonville, Fla. and Michael of Grayson, Ga. Mr. Davis is also survived by 2 special sisters, Bettye Stringfellow of Huntsville, Alabama and Katherine Davis of Rome and his twin brother, Harold Davis of Chattanooga, Tennessee.

He was preceded in death by his 3 sisters, Algeria Elliott of Hemingway, South Carolina, Margaret Ulm of Dunnellon, Florida and Anita Matthews of Macon, Georgia and his 2 brothers, Billy and Marvin Davis of Rome, Georgia.

A celebration of his life will be held at 4 o'clock on Wednesday afternoon, May 19th, 2010 in the Parkview Chapel of Fred Talley's Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert M. Skelton and the Rev. Blake Albritton officiating. Military honors will be presented by members of the Marine Corps League of Rome at the time of the service. A private graveside service will be held for the family with military honors presented by the Shanklin-Attaway Post #5 Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends for Herbert L. Davis at Fred Talley's Parkview Chapel on Wednesday afternoon from 2:00 until 4 o'clock before the memorial service. Members of Mr. Davis' Sunday School class and members of the Marine Corps League of Rome Jake Puryear Detachment #1020 are requested to serve as honorary pallbearers.

Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be given to the Shorter Avenue Baptist Church Building Fund at 1410 Shorter Avenue, Rome Georgia 30165.
