James Calvin Denson, Sr.

J.C. Denson, Sr., 82, of 23 Robin Hood Road, Rome, lost a courageous battle with cancer on Thursday, December 20th, 2007 at a local hospital.
Mr. Denson was born on December 1st, 1925 in Cherokee County, Alabama, oldest son of the late Reverend W.O. and Idell Hawkins Denson. He was educated in the Floyd County Schools and was retired from the Atlanta Gas Light Company after 32 years of service. Mr. Denson was a World War II veteran having served eight years and received the rank of Master Sergeant while serving in the Army in the South Pacific. He was ordained a deacon at Sherwood Forest Baptist Church. Mr. Denson was currently a member of Friendship Baptist Church where he served as President of the Crusaders' Sunday School class and was a member of the Classy Seniors. He was a member of the Cherokee Masonic Lodge #66 F&AM, the Low 12 Club and received his 50 year Masonic membership pin and apron in 2006. Mr. Denson was a loyal Atlanta Braves and University of Georgia fan. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mrs. Mary Sue Thomas.
Mr. Denson is survived by his wife of 52 years, the former Dawn Billingsley of Rome, to whom he was married on September 3rd, 1955. He was a loving and devoted father to two children, Rusty Denson and his wife, Mary of Lawrenceville, Georgia and Melanie Wright and her husband, Van of Rome. He was also the proud grandfather to two precious granddaughters, Hailey Denson and Keelie Denson both of Lawrenceville, Georgia. Two sisters, Alta Raudonis and Flora Allen both of Rome, and a brother, Curtis Denson of Lawrenceville also survive him. Numerous nieces and nephews survive as well.
Funeral services for J. C. Denson, Sr. will be held Sunday afternoon, December 23rd, 2007 at 4 o'clock from the Parkview Chapel of Fred Talley's Funeral Home with Dr. Rodger Whorton and Rev. Ken Hinkley officiating with interment to follow in East View Cemetery with Shanklin-Attaway Post #5 American Legion Honor Guard conducting military graveside rites and Cherokee Masonic Lodge #66 F&AM conducting Masonic graveside rites. There will be a called communication of Cherokee Masonic Lodge on Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the lodge for the purpose of attending funeral services for Mr. Denson.
Mr. Denson will lie-in-state at Fred Talley's Parkview Chapel where the family will receive friends this (Saturday) evening from 6 until 8 o'clock. At other hours the family may be contacted at the residence.
Active pallbearers include his nephews, Terry Morgan, James Boggs, Jim Boggs, David Thomas, Wayne Thomas, Waylon Billingsley; honorary pallbearers include, William Morgan, Charles Gladden, David Billingsley, Buford Ingram, Gene Wigley, and members of the Friendship Baptist Church Crusaders' Sunday School Class.
