James Edward Joe Gossett

James E. "Joe" Gossett, age 65, of #505 Armuchee Trail, Rome, died Thursday morning, November 22nd, 2007 at a Rome, Ga. hospital.
A native of Floyd County, Mr. Gossett was born on October 6th, 1942, the son of Veria Olive Gossett and the late Leo Gossett. Mr. Gossett has spent the greater part of his life in Floyd County and was a 1960 graduate of Cave Springs High School, attended West Georgia College and Coosa Valley Tech. On January 27th, 1964 was employed by the Georgia State Patrol at Post #5, Dalton, as a radio operator. He attended The 25th GSP Trooper School graduating on September 12th, 1964 and then was assigned to Post #21 Sylvania, Ga. as Trooper #177. October 17th, 1967 he was assigned to Post # 5, Dalton as trooper #192, transferred to Rome Post #38 on November 1st, 1970, A 1974 graduate of Georgia State University with a B.S. Degree in Criminal Justice and on February 1st, 1974, Joe was promoted to Corporal at Post #38 in Rome. On May 16th 1977, he was promoted to SGT. - Post Commander at Post #38 Rome. On July 31st, 1982 was upgraded to position S.F.C. and on February 1st, 1997 was promoted to Lieutenant in Trooper A. Joe retired as a Lieutenant on February 1st, 1998 from the Georgia State Patrol. He was a Vietnam veteran having served in the United States Army from 1964 - 1967. He was a member of the Alpine Community Church in Menlo, GA., was a Mason and a member of Georgia Peace Officers Association.
Survivors include his wife, Lynda Tatum Gossett to whom he was married on November 7th, 1965, 2 sons and a daughter-in-law, Jody Gossett of Marietta, GA. and John and Sonia Gossett of Jasper, GA.; 2 grandsons, Joseph and Daniel Gossett, his mother, Veria Gossett of Cave Springs, GA.; 1 brother, Dr. Ken Gossett of Rome; his mother-in-law, Helen Tatum of Cave Springs, GA. Nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services for James E. "Joe" Gossett will be held on Sunday afternoon, November 25th, 2007 at 2 o'clock from the Parkview Chapel of Fred Talley's Funeral Home with the Rev. Tommy Pledger and Dr. Jimmy Lewis officiating. Interment will follow in the family lot of Cave Springs Cemetery with the Georgia State Patrol Honor Guard conducting graveside rite.
The following are requested to serve as active pallbearers, Max, Matthew and Jeremy Treadaway, Kenneth Preather, Chuck Burnett, Eddie Ivey, Gary McConnell, David Wilson, Lester Rampy and Thomas Dempsey. Honorary pallbearer will include active and retired members of the Georgia State Patrol, Floyd County Polices Officers, Rome City Police Officers, Chattooga County Police Officers, Gordon County Police Officers, Summerville City Police Officers and members of the Georgia Game and Fish Commission.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 33 Central Plaza, Rome, Georgia 30161.
James E. "Joe" Gossett will remain at Fred Talley's Parkview Chapel where the family will receive friends this (Saturday) evening from 5 until 8 o'clock. At other hours they will be at the residence.
