Kathryn Onez Burnes

Mrs. Kathryn Onez McCurry Burnes, age 83, formerly of #4 Hillcrest Avenue in North Rome, died Saturday morning, November 13th, 2010 following an extended illness with Alzheimer's disease.

Mrs. Burnes was born as Chastin McCurry in Polk County, Georgia on June 24th, 1927. She was the daughter of the late Joe Cephus McCurry and the late Cora Mae Pittman. She had been a resident of Rome and Floyd County most of her life and was an active member of the Shorter Avenue Baptist Church since January 21st, 1968 until her illness prevented her from attending church. During her younger years, Kathryn had been employed by Lillian's Bakery, Celanese and the former Creswell Convalescent Center. She was a wife, mother and grandmother most of her life. Kathryn studied her Bibles regularly and enjoyed gardening, playing the Harmonica, growing her flowers and caring for others in need. She was married on December 18th, 1948 in Haralson County, Georgia to the late Marvin E. Burnes, Jr. who preceded her in death on September 26th, 2008.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Burnes was preceded in death by her siblings, Virginia Bentley, Lucy Ovell Barber, Dorothy Lou Elliott, Marshall Everett McCurry, Fred Curtis McCurry, Allen Letcher McCurry and Loyd Hudon McCurry, who was born and died on August 15th, 1931.

Survivors include two sons: Craig Burnes and his wife, Sandra of Dalton, GA. and Johnny Burnes and his wife, Totsie of Rome; four granddaughters: Sara Burnes Andrews of Dalton and formerly of Rome, Beverly Burnes Shamblin of Lyerly, Ga., Holly Burnes and Emily Burnes both of Rome; two great-grandchildren, Alexander Haven Andrews and Nathaniel Scott Andrews both of Dalton; one brother also survives.

A Christian celebration of the life of Mrs. Kathryn Burnes will be conducted on Monday afternoon, November 15th, 2010 at 2:00 pm at the Shorter Avenue Baptist Church with the Rev. Max Tucker and the Rev. Gerald Rogers officiating. Interment will follow in the Oaknoll Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Burnes will lie-in-state at the church on Monday from 1 until 2 o'clock.

The following will serve as casket bearers: Doug Christie, Mike Worthington, Ricky Minshew, Johnny Burnes, Craig Burnes and Sammy Bentley.

Mrs. Burnes will remain at Fred Talley's Parkview Funeral Home where the family will receive friends this (Sunday) afternoon from 3 until 6 PM.

Flowers will be accepted by the family. However those desiring may make contributions in memory of Kathryn to Shorter Avenue Baptist Church, 1410 Shorter Avenue, Rome, Georgia 30165.
