Mabel Spencer

May 10, 1921 — January 28, 2011

Mabel Kasonawich Spencer, age 89, a life-long resident of Rome, and daughter of Austrian immigrants, Alex and Annie Kasonawich (original old world spelling), passed away peacefully on January 28th, 2011.

Mabel was a member of Fifth Avenue Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school for over 35 years. She was generous, loving, and kind-spirited living out her Christian faith and touching the lives of many.

Mabel worked many years in Human Resources for Celanese Corporation and worked in Quality Control for Sara Lee here in Rome.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, William (Billy) Strickland, who she cared for until his death. She then married high school sweetheart, Oliver Lee Spencer. They had 12 wonderful years together before his death.

Survivors include many nieces, nephews and friends.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 o'clock this (Wednesday) evening, February 2nd, 2011 at Fred Talley's Parkview Chapel with 11:00 a.m. services Thursday morning at the same with the Reverend Doctor Hugh Peacock and the Reverend John Geaney officiating. Floyd Chapter 501 O.E.S. will provide an Eastern Star service at the chapel on Wednesday evening at 7 o'clock.

Pallbearers, deacons from Fifth Avenue Baptist Church, include Dale Boyd, Melvin Alred, Al Mitchell, Bill Underwood, Larry Borders and Dale Allen. Honorary pallbearers include ordained ministers at Fifth Avenue Baptist Church and members of the Floyd Chapter 501 of the Order of the Eastern Star.

In lieu of flowers Mabel requested donations to the Fifth Avenue Baptist Church, 416 North 5th Avenue, Rome, Georgia 30165.

Her friends and family express sincere appreciation to the dedicated staff at Fifth Avenue Health Care for their excellent care, support, and friendship.
