Marvin Eugene Davis

April 19, 1925 — April 6, 2010

Marvin E. Davis, age 84, of Rome, died Tuesday afternoon, April 6th, 2010 at the residence.

A native of Floyd County, Mr. Davis was born on April 18th, 1925, the son of the late William Edgar and Lona Mae Stevens Davis. Mr. Davis was a veteran of World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War having served for 26 years (1942-1968) in the United States Marine Corps having retired in 1968 as a First Sergeant. During his distinguished service in the United States Marine Corps Mr. Davis served for more than 3 years as the N.C.O.I.C. of Marine security at the American Embassy in Rabat, Morocco. After being honorably discharged from the United States Marine Corps, Mr. Davis was associated with Julian Harrison Ford of Rome for 9 years as service manager and prior to his retirement served for 7 years as building superintendent at Fellowship Baptist Church. Mr. Davis was a very active member and Deacon of Fellowship Baptist Church where he was a member of the Men's 65 plus Sunday School Class, the Joy Makers at Fellowship Baptist Church, the Sounds of Praise choir and for many years was the home bound ministry leader at Fellowship Baptist Church. He was a member of the National and International Carpenters for Christ, Shanklin-Attaway Post #5 American Legion, the Marine Corps League, Jake Puryear Detachment #1020 of Rome and was a past leader of the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America. Mr. Davis was very active in Toys for Tots and was a graduate of Coosa Valley Tech.

Survivors include his wife Barbara Ann Reid Davis to whom he was married on February 23rd, 1947; 1 daughter and son-in-law, Becky and John Richard of Rome; 2 sons and daughter-in-laws, Tim and Karin Davis of Arlington, Tenn. and Steve and Cissy Davis of Rome; 7 grandchildren, Michelle Shanahan (Sean), Joshua Swinford (Danielle), Elizabeth Winters (Josh), Jonathan Swinford (Tonya), Jason Swinford, Jenny Swinford, Michael Davis and Maggie Davis. 9 great-grandchildren also survive as do 2 sisters, Betty Stringfellow of Huntsville, Ala. and Katherine Davis of Rome; 2 brothers, Harold Davis of Chattanooga, Tenn. and Herbert Davis (Bette)of Rome. Nieces and nephews also survive. Special friends of the family, Greg Swinford, Martha Davis, Meg Garcia, James Ashley, Bev and Susan Bevis and Lisa Swinford. Mr. Davis was preceded in death by a son, Christopher Davis and by a brother and 3 sisters.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Marvin E. Davis will be held on Saturday evening, April 10th, 2010 at 7 o'clock from the Parkview Chapel of Fred Talley's Funeral Home with Dr. Dale Levan and Jason Swinford officiating. Military honors will be presented by members of the Marine Corps League of Rome.

The family will receive friends for Marvin E. Davis at Fred Talley's Parkview Chapel on Saturday evening from 5 until 7 o'clock. At other hours they will be at the residence.

Members of the Men's 65 Plus Sunday School Class and members of the Marine Corps League of Rome, Jake Puryear Detachment #1020 are requested to serve as honorary pallbearers.
