Noel Gordon Carper

Dr. N. Gordon Carper of Rome passed away on September 3, 2011. Dr. Carper was born in Bettsville, Ohio on May 10, 1935, son of the late Glenn and Cleo Carper. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Gene Carper, and a sister, Eileen Warner.

Dr. Carper served 3 years in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a graduate of Heidelberg College, received his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Florida State University, and did post-graduate work at Harvard.

In 1965 Dr. Carper came to Berry College as Chairman of the Social Science Department and was Dana Professor of History from 1969 until his retirement in 2003. He established Berry's nationally ranked College Bowl program, which he led for over 30 years. He was honored with Lifetime Achievement Awards by the Association of College Unions and by College Bowl Inc.

He was recognized for excellence in teaching on numerous occasions and received commendation by the Georgia House of Representatives for 35 years of leadership at Berry College. In 1994, he received the Governor's Award in the Humanities. He served on the Georgia State Committee for the Humanities and was Chairman for 1 term. With his wife, he edited The Meaning of History, A Dictionary of Quotations. Dr. Carper is listed in Directory of American Scholars and Who's Who Among American Teachers.

Dr. Carper is survived by his wife, Joyce; sons, Noel Carper and Todd Carper; daughter-in-law, Karen; grandchildren, Kallan Carper, Justin McNeal, and Kristen McNeal; brother, Ken Carper and his wife Beverly; and several nieces and nephews.

Celebration of life services will be held on Saturday, September 10, 2011, at 2 p.m., in Berry College Chapel at Berry College. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Dr. N. Gordon Carper History Scholarship, Berry College Advancement Office, Mt. Berry, GA 30149 or American Lung Association.
