Sara Ann Greer

November 24, 1935 — February 13, 2011

Sara Ann Phillips Greer, age 75, of #6 West 10th Street, Rome passed away on Sunday morning, February 13th, 2011 at the residence.

A native of Floyd County, Mrs. Greer was born on November 24th, 1935, the eldest daughter of the late Ralph and Sara Vivian Slaughter Phillips. Mrs. Greer grew up in old Fourth Ward, where she was known throughout her life as Ms. Ann. She earned this title because all the older residents would ask her to visit with them after school, chit-chat and have refreshments. Thus, she became a favorite in the neighborhood, listening to their stories while enjoying their cookies. This love of people would last "Ms Ann" her entire life.

She graduated from Rome High School in 1954. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church until becoming a member of the Rome Seventh-Day Adventist Church where she remained until the time of her death, serving as a deaconess for several years.

She will be remembered by many for her bakery "Ann's Cakes and Supplies" which was located on Broad Street during the 1970's and early 1980's. Many older people had their wedding cake baked and hand decorated by Ann. Ann loved to share her gifts with others by introducing the fine "Art of Cake Decorating" to the Rome and surrounding areas. Homemakers and students could utilize their baking skills to include making the cake a work of art themselves. The classes in cake decorating were taught at Floyd Jr. College and Berry College and quickly became popular throughout the area.

Later, she moved to Columbus, GA. where she met and married Perry E. Greer. Together they owned and operated the Largest Furniture Stripping Business in Columbus and Phoenix City, Alabama.

In 1992, she moved back home to Rome after Mr. Greer's death. Ann retired in 2000 from Berry College Food Service where she served as the main dining hall manager and coordinator until her retirement. While at Berry, "Ms. Ann" was awarded several outstanding honors by the students and Berry College.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Brenda Kay Lackey and her husband, Randy, of Rome; 1 son, Kodiak B. Easterwood of Grand Canyon, AZ.; a grandson, Jacob Bruce Lackey of Athens, GA.; 2 sisters and a brother-in-law, Sandra Duvall of Rome and Lynda and Bobbie McKenzie of Rome; Sara was preceded in death by a brother, Hall Phillips. Nieces and nephews also survive.
