Virginia I. Myers, age 93 of Rome, passed away on Thursday morning, November 8th, 2012 at Golden Living Center of Rome.
Virginia was born on September 29th, 1919 in Lima, Ohio the daughter of the late Lyle Irvin Curry and the late Madeline Marie Glenn Curry. Virginia was a graduate of Cridersville High School in Cridersville, Ohio and was a World War II veteran having served in the United States Army where she was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, American Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal and the WAAC Service Ribbon. In 1973, Virginia retired from the State of Florida as a high school registrar of Stranahan High in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. For the next 20 years Virginia and her late husband, Ray toured the entire lower 48 states by motor home. Virginia and her late husband, Ray resided in Lake Placid, Fla. from 1973 until 1989 at which time they moved to Rome, Georgia to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Here in Rome they celebrated their 50th, wedding anniversary in April before Ray died eight months later in 1998. Virginia's involvement in organizations have been extensive. She was elected as the first female commander of American Legion Lake Placid Post #25 in 1979. At the Florida Department Convention in 1980, she was awarded the coveted award, a trophy, for having recognition of Post #25 being the best post in the entire state of Florida. She also received six other awards. At this time, she was awarded a Life Membership in the American Legion and also a Life Membership in the Florida State Commanders Club. In 1980, Florida Placid Post #25 awarded her a plaque for being named the Legionnaire of the Year for their post. In 2006, Georgia's Rome Shanklin-Attaway Post #5, named her as their Legionnaire of the year. Virginia was a member of the First Christian Church of Rome. Virginia was a life time member of the American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, LaSociete des 40/8 and Florida Past Commanders Club. Other memberships include LaSociete de Femme Cabane 1228(40/8), Veteran of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Charter Member- The Women's Memorial Foundation #255382, DAR #894972 and the Floyd County Republican Women. Virginia was preceded death by a son, Michael Ray Myers in 2003 and a son-in-law, Wesley Griffin in 2001. She was married on April 2nd, 1948 to Ray Eugene Myers who preceded her in death on September 6th, 1998.
Survivors include 3 daughters, Sandra (Greg) Mixson of Pine Mountain, GA, Linda Griffin of Davie, Fla. and Connie (Henry) Pollitz of Rome; 6 grandchildren,; 5 Great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandson; 1 sister, Georgia Ann Meece of Lexington, KY.; 1 brother, Robert Edwin Curry of Upsilanti, Mich.
Funeral services for Virginia will be held Monday evening, November 12th, 2012 at 7 o'clock from the Parkview Chapel of Fred Talley's Funeral Home with the Reverend Horace Stewart and the Reverend LeBron McBride officiating. Shanklin-Attaway Post #5 American Legion Honor Guard will conduct Military Honors. Private interment will follow later in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at Fred Talley's on Monday evening from 6 until 7 o'clock.
