Wayne Homer Ballard

Wayne H. Ballard, age 73, of #411 Nichols Road, SE, Rome, passed away on Sunday afternoon, March 6th, 2011 at a Rome hospital.

A native of Floyd County, Wayne was born on September 7th, 1937, the son of the late James Edgar Ballard and the late Era Boyd Ballard. He spent the greater part of his life in Floyd County and attended Model High School. Wayne graduated from North Georgia Tech and Coosa Valley Tech. He was a licensed cosmetologist and a professional photographer. Wayne served in the United States Navy from 1955-1959 having served on a Destroyer in the South Pacific having been honorably discharged as a Third Class Petty Officer. For a period of time, Wayne was associated with the Celanese Corp. Northwest Georgia Regional Hospital, was employed with the Alto Sate Prison system and for 10 years served with the Floyd County Police Department. He was a member of the Spring Creek Baptist Church where he was a member of the Wayne Brumbelow Sunday School Class and over the years he served as the original church greeter, was a member of the Van Team and was a leader of the kitchen team. Wayne had many hobbies and interests throughout his life. He loved flying small airplanes, sky diving, karate, bowling, golf and traveling. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Kristin Brooke Anderson, by a brother, Robert Ballard and by a sister, Billie Fay Selman

Survivors include his wife, Martha Eugenia Alford Ballard, 2 daughters, Melody Ballard Anderson of Woodstock, GA. and Stephanie Ballard Lambert and her husband, Brad of Armuchee; 4 grandchildren, Matthew Anderson (Amanda) of Dallas, TX., Luke Wood, Jessica Lambert and Leah Grace Lambert all of Armuchee; a great-grandson, Dallas Anderson of Dallas, TX.; a brother, Rev. Douglas Ballard (Sandy) of Acworth, GA.; 2 sisters, Frances Nelson and Tera Mae Silvers both of Rome. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services for Wayne H. Ballard will be held on Wednesday afternoon, March 9th, 2011 at 2 o'clock at Spring Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Douglas Ballard, Bill Adams and Jim Reynolds officiating. Interment will follow in Floyd Memory Gardens. Mr. Ballard will lie-in-state at the church on Wednesday from 1 until 2 o'clock.

The following will serve as active pallbearers, Billy Bishop, David Compton, Terrell Rigdon, Wally Brown, Ed Selman and Gary Pace. The following will serve as honorary pallbearers, Hoyett Crews, James Hulsey, Gene Smith and the members of The Wayne Brumbelow Sunday School Class.

Mr. Ballard will remain at Fred Talley's Parkview Chapel where the family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 6 until 9 o'clock. At other hours they will be at the residence.
