William Arbon Reed

William A. "Snook" Reed, age 85, of #112 Armstrong Street, Rome, died on Saturday evening, September 5th, 2009 at a local hospital after a courageous battle with Alzheimers.
A native of Floyd County, Mr. Reed was born on October 15th, 1923, the son of the late Rollie and Alma White Reed. He had spent the greater part of his life in Floyd County and was a member of the New Cannan Baptist Church. Mr. Reed was a highly decorated war hero of World War II having served in the United States Army, being awarded 5 Bronze Stars and The Purple Heart for his service to his country from 1943 until 1945. Prior to his retirement, Mr. Reed was in the building industry and an avid baseball fan and a softball coach. Mr. Reed was preceded in death by his loving wife of almost 60 years, Vivian Inez Barton Reed on October 29th, 2005 to whom he was married on March 30th, 1946.
Survivors include a daughter, Lynn Reed of Rome; a son and daughter-in-law, Darrell and Linda Reed of Rome; 5 grandchildren, Kim Reed, Paige Alexander, Ryan Reed (Marie), Nikki Baddu and Rocky Barton; 3 great-grandchildren, Gavin Graves, Channing Alexander and Ben Reed; 1 sister, Alma Johnston of Rome and 1 brother, Herman Reed of Rome. Nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services for William A. "Snook" Reed will be held this (Tuesday) afternoon, September 8th, 2009 at 2 o'clock from the Parkview Chapel of Fred Talley's Funeral Home with Dr. Gary Graves officiating. Interment will follow in the family lot of the Beech Creek United Methodist Church Cemetery with Shanklin-Attaway Post #5 Honor Guard conducting military graveside rites.
Nephews will serve as active pallbearers and are requested to assemble at the funeral home this afternoon by 1:15 p.m.
Mr. Reed will remain at Fred Talley's Parkview Chapel where the family received friends on Monday evening from 6 until 8 o'clock. At other hours they will be at the residence.
