William Howard Mathis

William Howard Mathis, age 89, of #4619 Big Texas Valley Road, Rome, died Monday night, May 28th, 2007, at a local hospital.
A native of Gordon County, Georgia, Mr. Mathis was born on January 25th, 1918, the son of the late Lester L. and Ruby Wilson Mathis. He had spent the greater part of his life in Floyd County and was a long time member of the Antioch Baptist Church and taught Sunday School for several years. Mr. Mathis was a member of the Adult Sunday School Class at Antioch and for many years was co-owner and operator of Mathis and Patterson Sawmill and Logging Company. Prior to his retirement Mr. Mathis was associated with S.I. Story Lumber Company. Mr. Mathis was preceded in death by a daughter, Eunice Mathis Dean on November 15th, 1996 and by 2 sisters, Opal Ray Selman and Annie Mae Buffington. Mr. Mathis was married on December 18th, 1943 to Jewell Dean Cordle Mathis who preceded him in death on July 24th, 2003. Mr. Mathis served with the Civilian Conservation Corps from 1935 to 1938.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Allen and Sandra Mathis of Rome, 1 sister, Mrs. Adell Crider of Forney, Alabama.
Funeral services for Mr. Mathis will be held this (Wednesday) afternoon, May 30th, 2007, at 3:30 at the Antioch Baptist Church with the Rev. Bobby Stephens and Rev. Greg Free officiating with interment to follow in the Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery. Mr. Mathis will lie-in-state at the church this (Wednesday) afternoon from 2:00 until 3:30. The family will receive friends this (Wednesday) afternoon at the church from 2 until 3:30. At other hours they will be at the residence.
The following will serve as active pallbearers, Dr. Price Cordle, LeRoy Cordle, J.C. Cordle, K.M. Miller, Leonard and Jimmy Buffington. Horace Adams, Pat Smith and members of the Senior Adult Sunday School Class will serve as honorary pallbearers.
