Burl McFry, Jr

March 25, 1934 — November 19, 2023

Burl McFry, Jr., 89, passed away in Rome, GA., Sunday, November 19, 2023 after a brief illness.

Mr. McFry was born March 25, 1934 to the late W. B. McFry, Sr. and Fannie Lou McFry in Spring Garden, Alabama. He married the late Wyline Grogan, his middle school sweetheart on August 10, 1951, and together they had two sons, seven grandchildren, and a host of great-grandchildren. Mr. McFry and his brother, Norris, built their home in Shannon, Georgia, on family land where they lived for over 70 years. He enjoyed gardening and sharing the harvest with neighbors and church members, motorcycle rides and camping in North Georgia and Tennessee, and attending antique engine and craft shows where his wife, Wyline, sold a variety of baked good and crafts. Mr. McFry was a loyal servant to God, first and foremost. He was a faithful member of Antioch Baptist Church for many years where he taught Sunday School Class and was active in church events and fundraisers. In his youth, he worked in the textile industry for over 25 years and worked as custodian for the First United Methodist Church in Rome for several years at the end of his career. In his free time, he loved being with his grandchildren and often took meals to friends and church members in need. His children and grandchildren remember him as a devoted and loving father, grandfather, and friend who will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Mr. McFry is survived by his sons Gerald McFry (Rome, GA) and Bobby McFry (Calhoun, GA). He is preceded in death by his sister, Lois Davis (Piedmont, AL) and his brothers Norris McFry, (Rome, GA) and Tatum McFry (Fresno, CA).

Funeral services to celebrate the life of Mr. McFry will be held at Salmon Funeral Home in Rome. The family will receive friends on Saturday, November 25, 2023, from 12:30 PM until 1:45 PM. The funeral service will follow the visitation at 2:00 PM on the same day. A graveside service will be conducted at Oakland Cemetery following the funeral service.

The Reverend Greg Free will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Mr. McFry’s life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Antioch Baptist Church, 4526 Big Texas Valley Road, Rome, Georgia. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Heyman Hospice, and Shirley LeMaster, for their compassionate care and efforts to make his last days comfortable and the support they provided the family, and the members of Antioch Baptist Church for their support over the last years of his life.
