Charles Don Chupp, Sr, 89, of Rome, Georgia, passed away on Sunday, August 30th. He was born in Rockmart, Georgia, to Thomas Martin Chupp, Sr and Ludie Singleton Chupp. He grew up in the Grant Park area of Atlanta, where he attended Hoke Smith High School and then Georgia Tech.
Don lived a long life and will be remembered as a loving husband of 66 years to his precious Mary Strickland Chupp. He was a devoted father to Charles Don "Donny" Chupp, Jr and David Jeffrey Chupp, Sr and to his two daughters-in-law: Joy Rochester Chupp (Donny) and Shirley Lanham Chupp (David). He was the delighted grandfather of 5 grandchildren: Jeffrey Chupp (Julia), Andrew Chupp (Meredith), Mary Elizabeth Chupp Johns (Brandon), Hannah Chupp Addis (Chris) and Meriel Chupp Witt (Eli). He was the great-grandfather of 11! Trey Chupp, Benjamin Chupp, Laura Chupp, Hudson Johns, Kate Chupp, Asher Johns, Samuel Chupp, Amelia Johns, Eleanor Chupp, Clementine Addis, Charlie Addis, and Michael Addis. He was the brother of Tommy Chupp (Donna), Ted Chupp (Jane), and Terry Chupp (Marylee); he was an uncle to 7 nieces and nephews. Don was "outrun" to the Father's House by: his wife Mary, son Donny, great-granddaughter Charlie, parents, Martin and Ludie Singleton Chupp, mother and father-in-law Henry and Voncile Whitley Strickland, brother, Thomas Martin "Tommy" Chupp, Jr, and sister-in-law, Gloria Chupp. All were waiting and cheering as he crossed the finish line into the arms of his Savior.
Don loved music and served as a choir director at several churches over many years. He enjoyed singing in the choir at Mizpah, where he had been a member for the past several years. At one time, Don worked for the Uniroyal Tire Company, owned a cleaning business and then a gift shop, and worked for Laquita Inns. But he was probably most proud of his work as a gifted upholsterer with many historic pieces restored at Berry College. He was a scout leader, Boys Club Choir chaperone, band and football equipment hauler. He will be remembered for his ability to do anything he put his mind to, but mostly for his quick wit and sense of humor! "Grandaddy" will be missed, but we take joy in knowing that we do not "sorrow as those without hope"! We will see him again!
Memorial Services for Charles Don Chupp, Sr will be held Saturday, September 5th at Mizpah Church. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM, with a service at 11:00 AM at Mizpah Church, 4073 Kingston Hwy Kingston, GA 30145. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a special project for kids at Morrison Campground. Make checks payable to Morrison Campground and mail to: Vicky Knight 23 Palmer Drive Rome, GA 30165.
