Elizabeth "Aline" Wofford

February 12, 1938 — October 3, 2023

Smyrna

Elizabeth “Aline” Leach Wofford of Rome, Georgia passed away peacefully Tuesday, October 3, 2023. Aline was born on February 12, 1938 in Lindale, Georgia and spent almost her entire life as a resident of Floyd County, Georgia. It was a life focused on serving others, always being active, and never meeting a stranger.

Her quest for always being active began at the Pepperell schools in Lindale where she played on several sports teams, marched in the band, and cheered at football games. After marrying Clyde Wofford, Jr., she joined Hillcrest Baptist Church in Rome and began a mission of service and leadership. Her many roles included, choir member, Sunday School teacher & secretary, pastor search committees, children’s service leader, and youth ministry leader. Working with children and youth were her favorite ways to serve by far.

Aline worked as a paraprofessional at Johnson Elementary School in the Floyd County School System for more than 20 years. She helped teach generations of students in the community. She took great pride in helping children one-on-one to learn a new skill or master a difficult task.

Her service to others continued outside of church and work. She could always be found supporting her children’s and grandchildren’s activities, chaperoning band and 4-H events and trips, and driving friends or those in need anywhere they needed to go.

Her ability to never meet a stranger is best demonstrated as a charter member of the Rome Braves Fan Club and season ticket holder for many years. With the constant roster changes of a minor league baseball team, she opened her home to players in
need of a place to live. She even welcomed their wives and families when they were in town. Aline always loved this opportunity to meet new people from all over the country.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Clyde H. Wofford, Jr.; her parents, Freeman and Ida Coxwell Leach; brothers, Marvin, Carl, and Buddy Leach; sisters, Mary Jane Morgan and Dorothy Scott; and in-laws, Clyde and Lizzie Wofford.

Aline is survived by her children, Sheila (Mark) Jones of Mableton, Georgia; and Randy (Lisa) Wofford of Athens, Georgia. She is also survived by her true pride and joy, her four grandchildren; Matthew Jones, Ryan Jones, Adam Wofford, and Casey Wofford, as well as many nieces and nephews.

On Monday, October 9, the family will receive friends at 1:00 PM at Salmon Funeral Home, Rome, Ga with the service following at 2:00 PM in the funeral home chapel. Interment will be held immediately following the service at Eastview Cemetery, Rome,
Georgia.
