Sarah Evelyn Hamby Sims, 92 of Rome GA passed away peacefully October 2, 2026 with her daughter and son-in-law by her side. Born in Floyd County April 30, 1934, the 12th and last child born to Curtis and Vesta Hamby. She attended Armuchee High School where she played basketball. She was in her 20's when she met and married the love of her life, Roger Sims on February 2, 1954 in Ringold GA. Just as soon as they married her new husband left for a year to serve his county in Korea. What a reunion when he returned and they could begin their life together. "Ev" as she always preferred to be called, was a spitfire with a deep devotion to Roger. Her love for her mother was always strong and she cared for her, encouraged her crafting and made all her clothing. While living in Merritt Island FL, in October of 1958 the couple welcomed a daughter, Marka Dawn. When they relocated to Marieta GA she became an active member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. In 1966 the family moved "back home" to Rome GA. The family joined Lakeview Baptist Church where "Ev" was very involved as a Deacon's wife.
She was an extremely talented seamstress, learning from her mom, and made all of her and her daughters clothing. Christmas Morning all Marka's Barbie's were in new handsewn fashion forward outfits. Roger was passionate about flying private planes and she began taking lessons. Ev was a homemaker until January of 1979 when Roger passed away suddenly the day after his 46 th birthday. After several difficult months adjusting to her new life, she made the decision in June of 1980 to purchase The Clotheshorse, a local boutique. She dressed the women of Rome for 30 years, her skill for knowing fit and well-made garments made her successful. She was awarded the very first "Small Business of the Year" in Rome. Several years later she was recognized by the Resident Buying Office of the Atlanta Apparel Mart for Excellence in Retail, and later, WWD (Women's World Daily) featured Evelyn and her poodle "Furby" who was known as the downtown dog who accompanied her to work each and every day. In 2009 Greg & Marka welcomed their son, Roger Coltan Palmer, into their family. Being a "Gran" was a great joy to Ev. Coltan spent hours at The Clotheshorse as he grew up and was named "Playroom Manager". She met and had a companion in Doyal Watson for many years until his passing in 2009. It was in 2010 that she sold The Clotheshorse. During that time Beverly Bone Emerson had worked alongside her and became a very close friend.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and the following siblings, Olen Hamby, Quinton Hamby, Parrott Hamby, Gordon Hamby, Verlon Hamby, Elsie King, Etoile Hamby, Vernie Hamby, Lois Franks, Dorothy Nicholson & Louise Everett.
Mrs. Sims leaves behind a daughter, Marka Sims Palmer, a son-in-law, Greg Palmer of Rome (who she referred to as her favorite child), and her grandson, Roger Coltan Palmer of Priceville, AL.
