Friedrich Oswald Zobrist, “Fred,” passed away on July 31, 2026, in Rome, Georgia, surrounded by his loved ones. Born on January 27, 1952, in Jos, Nigeria, Fred lived a life devoted to his family and his faith.
Fred was raised primarily in West Africa while his parents served in the mission field; he served for several years in the United States Army and later attained several master’s degrees and carried a lifelong love for education and passion for teaching. He worked for many years as an educator in various positions with both children and adults.
Family was at the center of Fred’s world. He is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Carla Wijtman Zobrist. Fred’s legacy continues through his children and their families: his sons, Baruch Zobrist (Amanda), Yoram Zobrist, and Yochanan Zobrist (Lexi); and his daughters, Nava Sepulveda (Igor) and Shira Kerce (Matthew). Known for his warmth, Fred deeply enjoyed spending time with his family, particularly cherishing moments with his grandchildren: Nathan, Andrew, Henry, Samuel, Maya, Ines, Jack, Wilder, Dylan, and Tripp. He is also survived by his sister Cora Klay (Ken), brother Bill Zobrist (Jill), brother-in-law, Jorge Guzman and many nieces and nephews and their families.
He was preceded in death by his father, Oswald Zobrist; his mother, Irene Archer Zobrist; and his sister, Heidi Guzman Zobrist.
Fred will be remembered as a loving presence whose kindness, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to his family and his faith leaves a legacy that will be cherished by all who knew him. He enjoyed playing guitar and singing with family, hiking and staying active, and studying scripture.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at Salmon Funeral Home. The memorial service will follow at 11:00 AM in the chapel of Salmon Funeral home.
