Mr. George Terrell Howard, age 79, of the Garden Lakes community, Rome, GA, died Thursday morning, February 9, 2012, at Golden Living Center of Rome.
Mr. Howard was born on February 22, 1932, in Toccoa, GA, the son of the late J.W. Howard, Sr., and the late Beulah Black Howard. He had been a resident of Rome and Floyd County since 1975, moving here from Doraville, GA. Prior to his retirement Mr. Howard served as Postmaster General of Rome from 1975 thru 1989. He was a graduate of Toccoa High School and was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during the Korean War. Mr. Howard was a member of the First Christian Church of Rome, the Optimist Club of Rome and the Shanklin-Attaway Post 5 of the American Legion. He also was active with the Carpenters for Christ. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his son, Gregg Howard, on December 16, 1994.
Mr. Howard is survived by his wife, Eleanor Whitworth Howard, to whom he was married on March 5, 1954; a granddaughter and her husband, Amanda and Danny Waits of Cave Spring, GA; two great-grandchildren, Augusta and Abby Cate Waits; a daughter-in-law, Sybil Howard of Cave Spring. Nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services for Mr. Howard will be held on Sunday afternoon, February 12, 2012, at 3:00 p.m. in the Parkview Chapel of Fred Talley's Funeral Home with Rev. Horace Stewart officiating. Interment will follow in the Oaknoll Memorial Gardens with the Shanklin-Attaway Post 5 of the American Legion Honor Guard conferring military graveside rites.
Mr. Howard will remain in Fred Talley's Parkview Chapel Funeral Home where the family will receive friends this (Saturday) evening beginning at 6:00 p.m.
