Gilbert Leon Pledger

March 22, 1920 — December 2, 2006

Gilbert Leon Pledger, age 86, of 1407 Cave Springs Road, Rome, died Saturday afternoon, December 2nd, 2006, at a local hospital.
A native of Floyd County, Mr. Pledger was born on March 22nd, 1920, the son of the late James A. and Mary Jane Phillips Pledger. He was a life long resident of Floyd County and was a World War II veteran serving with the U.S. Army in Tunisia, Sicily, Rome Arno and the European African Middle Eastern Theater having been awarded 3 Bronze Stars, the Good Conduct Medal and the American Defense Service Ribbon. Mr. Pledger was a long time member of the East Rome Baptist Church and the Adult Fellowship Sunday School Class. He was a 50 year member of Oostanaula Masonic Lodge #113 F&AM and a member of the Low 12 Club. Prior to retiring in 1971 he was associated with Integrated Products of Rome. Mr. Pledger loved gardening and never met a stranger. He was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Annie Ball and Eunice Terry and by 2 brothers, Charlie and Shelton Pledger. Mr. Pledger was married on May 17th, 1946, to Calia Sue Barnard Pledger who preceded him in death on August 24th, 2003.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Jeff Dunagan of Cave Spring, GA.; a son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Mona Pledger of Rome, 2 grandchildren, Courtney Pledger and Dr. Todd Pledger and his wife, Jody all of Rome; 2 great-grandchildren, Sydney Taylor Pledger and Jackson McCain Pledger; 1 brother, Doyal Pledger of Ranger, GA. Special care givers, Mrs. Katie Reese, Mrs. Laverne Rooks, Johnny and Eloise Childs and Frances Clemones Nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral service for Mr. Pledger will be held Tuesday morning, December 5th, 2006, at 11 o'clock from the Parkview Chapel of Fred Talley's Funeral Home with the Rev. J. Kenneth Hinkley and the Rev. Larry Davis officiating with interment to follow in the family lot of East View Cemetery with Shanklin-Attaway Post #5 Honor Guard American Legion conducting military graveside rites and Oostanaula Masonic Lodge #113 F&AM conducting Masonic graveside rites. There will be a called communications of Oostanaula Masonic Lodge on Tuesday morning at the lodge.
Active pallbearers include, Charles Pledger, James Green, Clifford Dudley, Harold Bray, James Lowery, Alton Dudley, Roy Gilreath and Rev. Rayford Davenport. Honorary pallbearers include, Johnny and Eloise Childs, and members of the Adult Fellowship Sunday Scholl Class.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday morning from 9:30 until 11 o'clock. At other hours they will at the home of the son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Mona Pledger, #11 Westlyn Drive, Rome.
