James Stewart Smith, age 78, of Rome, passed away on Saturday night, September 22nd, 2012 at a Rome hospital.
A native of Floyd County, Mr. Smith was born on January 2, 1934, the son of the late Lacy Ford Smith and the late Gaddis Elizabeth Griffin Smith. He was a life long resident of Floyd County and was a graduate of Coosa High School. Mr. Smith was a member of the Shorter Avenue Baptist Church and was a member of the Coosa Masonic Lodge #622 F&AM. Mr. Smith was a retired builder. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by a brother, Joe Smith.
Survivors include his wife, Annie Catherine Whatley Smith to whom he was married on December 13th, 1952; a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Kelly Alred of Rome; 5 sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Stanley Smith and his wife Cecelia of Rome, Brennon and Julie Smith of Rocky Face, GA., Chris and April Smith of Rome, Tim and Lorna Smith of Waldorf, MD. and Paul and Mistee Smith of Rome; 17 grandchildren, Allison Fuquea, Crystal Whelchel, Angela Buffington, Shelby Smith, Captain Brennon Smith, Jr. U.S.M.C., Jonathan Smith, Kristin Smith, Meredith Smith, Griffin Smith, Mallory Smith, Sarah Smith, William Smith, Edward Smith Emily Smith, Francesca Smith, Christopher Alred and Ashley Alred; 7 great-grandchildren, Kayleigh Whelchel, Nathan Whelchel, Jake Boatner, Brandon Fuquea, Kaden Buffington, Malachi Buffington and William Smith, II; 1 sister, Jean Harris of Rome; 2 brothers, Jerry Smith and Billy Smith both of Rome. Nieces and nephews also survive
Funeral services for James Stewart Smith will be held on Thursday evening, September 27th, 2012, at 7:30 p.m. in the Parkview Chapel of Fred Talley's Funeral Home with Reverend Frank Smith and his son, Dr. Stanley Smith officiating. Graveside and interment services for Mr. Smith will follow on Friday morning, September 28th, 2012 at 10 o'clock at the family lot of Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at Fred Talley's Parkview Chapel on Thursday evening from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. At other hours they will be at their respective homes.
Mr. Smith's sons and grandsons will serve as active pallbearers.
