Jo Ann Cummings Mills of the Bells Ferry Road, Rome, passed away on Tuesday afternoon, June 18, 2013 at a Rome hospital.
A native of Ashburn, Georgia, Jo Ann was born on August 1, 1939, the daughter of the late Joe M. and Viola R. Sumner. Jo Ann was a graduate of Turner County High School in Ashburn, Georgia. Jo Ann had been a resident of Rome since mid 1950s moving to Rome from Ashburn, Georgia. Jo Ann was a member of the Enon Baptist Church where she was a member of the Adult Sunday School Class. Jo Ann was a Volunteer Events Coordinator of the Rome Boys Club for many years. Jo Ann's service to the community was wide-ranging, enriching the lives of many Rome youths. She not only chaperoned International trips of the Rome Boys Club Choir, but also led local training for parents with special needs children. Jo Ann was preceded in death by a son, Michael Cummings and by a daughter, Tommie Jo Chapman on November 6, 2011.
Survivors include her husband, Alex Mills, Sr. to whom she was married on June 1, 1963; 1 daughter, Angelia Kay Mills Gilbert of Rome; 3 sons, Alex Mills, Jr. of Concord, N.C., Terry Lee Mills of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Gary Howard Mills and his wife, Barbara of Colorado Springs, Colo.; 3 grandchildren also survive as do a son-in-law, Glen Chapman of Rome.
Funeral services for Jo Ann Cummings Mills will be held on Saturday afternoon, June 22, 2013 at 1 o'clock at the Enon Baptist Church with Reverend Ken Hinkley and Dr. Bill Dempsey officiating. Interment will follow in the family lot of the Oostanaula United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The following will serve as active pallbearers, Glen Chapman, Alex Mills, Jr., Terry Mills, Gary Mills, Bill Roberts and Mark Eubanks.
Jo Ann will remain at Fred Talley's Parkview Chapel where the family will received friends this (Friday) evening, June 21, 2013 from 6 until 8 o'clock. At other hours they will be at the residence.
