John Gordon Harris

John Gordon Harris, age 97, of the Salley Davis Road, Armuchee, GA. and a former long time resident of Couper Street in North Rome, passed away on Wednesday morning, March 30th, 2011 at the residence.

A native of Roberta, Georgia, Mr. Harris was born on August 28th, 1913, the son of the late Henry Clifton Harris and the late Pearl Gordon Harris. He had spent the greater part of his life in Rome and was a World War II veteran having served in the United States Army. Mr. Harris was a long time member of the Hill Crest Baptist Church and prior to his retirement in 1970 he was associated with Merita Bakeries of Rome for many years. Mr. Harris was preceded in death by a son, Bob Gordon Harris in 1988. He was married on March 24th, 1939 to Aline Agnes Baldwin Harris who preceded him in death in 1999.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Clayton Edwards of Armuchee; 2 grandchildren, Allison Massey and her husband, James of Plainville, GA. and Jeff Harris and his wife, Jennifer of Silver Creek, GA.; 4 great-grandchildren, Brittany Thomason, Blake Thomason, Jessica and Jacob Harris. 3 step-grandchildren, Tim Edwards of Rockmart, GA., Michelle Jones of Summerville, GA. and Stacey Murphy of Rome also survive.

Funeral services for John Gordon Harris will be held on Monday afternoon, April 4th, 2011 at 2 o'clock from the Parkview Chapel of Fred Talley's Funeral Home with Rev. Stanley Smith officiating. Interment will follow in East View Cemetery with Shanklin-Attaway Post #5 American Legion Honor Guard conducting military graveside rites.

The following will serve as active pallbearers, David Weaver, Tim Edwards, Ben Helie, Clayton Edwards, Jeff Harris, James Massey, Johnny Baldwin and Butch Baldwin.

Mr. Harris will remain at Fred Talley's Parkview Chapel where the family will receive friends on Sunday afternoon from 2 until 5 o'clock. At other hours they will be at the residence.
