John Alexander Shahan passed away on Friday afternoon, January 2, 2026 surrounded by his loving family, after a brave and hard fight with cancer at the age of 80. Born on December 22, 1945, in Lafayette, Georgia, John was known for his unwavering dedication to education, family, and the craft of construction.
At the young age of 14, John’s journey began at Berry Academy where he found a lifelong home. He often reflected on his time at Berry, describing it as more than just an educational institution; it was the foundation of his character and future. He graduated from Berry Academy in 1964, went on to earn his degree from Berry College in 1969, and completed his Master of Arts of Teaching (MAT) at Middle Tennessee University in 1971.
His commitment to Berry Academy continued long after his graduation. John served as an industrial arts teacher for eight years, while also coaching baseball and basketball. His exceptional dedication to education earned him recognition as a Gund Instructor in 1972, highlighting his involvement and excellence in teaching. Throughout his life, John remained connected to Berry, serving three terms on the Alumni Council and receiving the Distinguished Service Award in 2014. In 2017, he was inducted into the Berry Academy Sports Hall of Fame, a testament to his lasting impact on the school. He played a significant role in establishing several student scholarships and co-founded the Berry Breakfast Club, demonstrating his gratitude for the institution that shaped him.
In 1977, seeking to follow his true calling, John founded John Shahan Construction. Over nearly five decades, he diligently served Floyd County and the surrounding communities through residential and commercial building and remodeling. A self-starter by nature, he approached his craft with unwavering dedication and integrity, finding genuine joy in his work.
John's life was defined by service, hard work, faith and a deep love for his family and his community. His influence was felt by family, friends, students, athletes and the many families and businesses who were touched by his chosen vocation. His faith was evident in his consistent presence and active participation at Pleasant Valley North Baptist Church, where he was a beloved member and loved to worship.
