Patty Locklear Mathis, of Rome, GA passed away peacefully on April 11, 2026, at a local healthcare facility surrounded by her family. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and cherished member of her community. Born on November 27, 1932, in Floyd County, Georgia, at her home, Patty lived a full and meaningful life of 93 years, touching the lives of many with her warmth and dedication.
A proud graduate of Rome Girls High School, class of 1949, Patty remained deeply connected to her roots and was known for her unwavering love and commitment to her family. She worked primarily in the home, where she poured her heart into supporting and nurturing those closest to her. Her strong family values were evident throughout her life, as she cherished the time spent with her large family.
Patty was an active and devoted member of Dykes Creek Baptist Church for over 60 years. Her passion for worship and fellowship was a cornerstone of her life, providing her with spiritual strength and a loving church community. Her dedication to her faith was as steadfast as her love for her family.
Mrs. Mathis is survived by her loving children: Benjie Mathis (Sandey) of Rome, Tim Mathis (Jan) of Kingston, Robert Mathis (Sabrina) of Kingston and Ann Spriggs (Tim) of Rome; she was the proud matriarch of twelve grandchildren and twenty-six great-grandchildren, all of whom brought immense joy and meaning to her life. Patty also valued the support and companionship of numerous other special family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy McArthur Locklear, Sr. and Imo Louise Howell Locklear, as well as brothers Mack and Mitchell Locklear. She was also preceded in death by her late husband, Edwin "Ed" Benjamin Mathis, Sr. whom she married on May 5, 1951 and shared nearly four decades of marriage until his passing in 1991. Her late husband’s memory remained a significant part of her life and many years filled with love and mutual respect.
There will be a private visitation and a Graveside service, with burial to follow at Sunset Hills Memorial Gardens at a later date. Pastor Tony Cagle will officiate and special music will be provided by Marcia Ely on bagpipes. The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers: Wes Mathis, Eddie Mathis, Zach Mathis, Ben Mathis, Connor Spriggs, Hunter Casey, Jackson Mathis, and Cole Mathis. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to Dykes Creek Baptist Church on the link below.
Patty Locklear Mathis leaves behind a legacy defined by love, faith and dedication to family. Her memory will continue to inspire those who knew her and her life stands as a beacon of devotion and grace.
