Thomas Griffin Parker, lovingly known to many as Tommy, passed away on August 19, 2026, in his hometown of Rome, Georgia, at the age of 72. Born on July 9, 1954, also in Rome, Thomas’s life was marked by resilience, creativity and a spirit of camaraderie that touched countless friends and family members.
Thomas was a proud graduate of West Rome High School, completing his studies with the class of 1972. As a young man, he was involved in the Boy Scouts, forming early connections to his local community and developing an appreciation for the great outdoors—passions that would remain with him throughout his life.
Despite facing the challenges of disability for much of his life, Thomas approached each day with humor and tenacity. He was best known for his talent as a folk artist. He inherited many of his folk artist qualities from his mother, a nationally known folk artist. Thomas created distinctive pieces, dedicated considerable time and energy to his craft, and enthusiastically shared his work at art shows, capturing the admiration of those who encountered his creations.
Those who knew Thomas will remember him as the “mayor of Summerville Park”—a testament to his exceptional sociability and the warmth he extended to everyone he met. Fiercely social, Thomas never met a stranger and was widely recognized for his quick wit and engaging humor.
Beyond his professional achievements and dedication to folk art, Thomas’s true joys were rooted in his favorite pastimes. He was an avid Georgia Tech fan, passionate about hunting deer and turkey, and found peace fishing—especially for trout. His love for the outdoors often led him on walks or travels, including memorable trips to Colorado and cherished visits to the beach. Even in his final days, Thomas spoke fondly of Colorado, reflecting the deep impression those experiences left on him. A lover of simple pleasures, Thomas was renowned for his homemade peach cobbler and his fondness for ice cream, creating sweet memories for those around him.
Thomas’s memory will be deeply treasured by his surviving family: daughters, Keeli Hood of Adairsvillle, GA and Jessica Parker of Rome; his brothers, Sammy (Mary) Parker of Rome and Jimmy Parker of Armuchee; and his adored grandchildren, Annie Hood and Ethan Earwood. He is also remembered by several extended family members and close friends. Tommy was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel Wright Parker, Jr and JoAnn Adams Parker, and his siblings, Judy Warren and David Parker, whose love and memories remain ever present in the lives of those he leaves behind.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2026, from 11:00 AM until 12:00 PM at Calvary Baptist Church in Rome. The memorial service will follow at 12:00 PM at the church with Pastor Gary Graves officiating.
Thomas Griffin Parker’s life was a tapestry of resilience, creativity, and community spirit. His legacy endures in the fond recollections of his family and friends, the laughter he inspired, and the rich artistry he gifted to the world.
