Mr. Vernon Valentine Thiel, age 83, passed away peacefully in his home in Rome, GA on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones.
Mr. Thiel was born on August 16, 1941, in Hammond, Indiana and was the son of the late Mr. Daniel A. Thiel and Mrs. Virginia M. Kretz Thiel. Vernon lived a life filled with passion, dedication, and a remarkable ability to connect with those around him. Vernon enjoyed a fulfilling career as a field Operations Superintendent with ComEd Power Company, where he exemplified a strong work ethic and honed his skills over many years. Beyond his professional life, he served honorably in the United States Marine Corps, a testament to his commitment to service and his country—a source of pride for both Vernon and his family. A man of many talents, Vernon was well-known for his hands-on abilities and could fix anything that came his way. His keen interest in craftsmanship shone through in his hobbies, particularly his fondness for epoxying tables in his free time. He had a deep appreciation for cars and was particularly fond of his Studebaker collection and NASCAR. Vernon possessed a remarkable wealth of knowledge, often delighting family and friends with engaging conversations filled with intriguing facts and stories. He had an extraordinary memory for landmarks, which added a unique touch to the stories he shared. His lively spirit and eagerness to discuss diverse topics made him a joy to be around. Also, Vernon had a sweet tooth and loved indulging in desserts!
Mr. Thiel is survived by his loving wife, Mary Ann Thiel of Rome, GA; sons: Todd Anthony (Angela) Thiel and Dustin Daniel Thiel; daughter, Laura (Brandon) Rohrdanz; brothers: John Thiel, Daniel Thiel and Thomas Thiel; sisters: Theresa Zack and Jean Thiel and three grandchildren: Zoe, Madeline and Hailey.
In keeping with his wishes, Vernon will be cremated and a graveside service and inurnment will be held at Georgia National Cemetery. As soon as the date and time is finalized, it will be announced here.
