Mr. William “Willie” Joe Self, age 95, went to be present with the Lord on Thursday, September 24, 2026.

Mr. Self was born in August of 1931 in Floyd County, Georgia. He spent his youth as a child of a farming family and as a standout athlete at Model High School. He then answered his nation’s call and served his beloved country as a sailor in the U.S. Navy. After completing his time in the military, Mr. Self worked for Lockheed-Martin, Battey Machinery Company, and finally J Supply Company. Mr. Self served J Supply as its purchasing agent for over 30 years until his retirement. During retirement, Mr. Self enjoyed spending time with his immediate and extended family. He especially enjoyed playing golf and sharing meals with his siblings and close friends.

Mr. Self was a born-again Christian of the Baptist faith. Over the years, he was a faithful member of West Rome Baptist Church and Friendship Baptist Church. During those years, he served in many roles such as deacon and Sunday-school superintendent.

Mr. Self was a family man. He was faithfully married to Wetonia Faye Self whom he dearly loved. He was the father of Carolyn Chislom and her husband, Johnathan and the late John Oliver Self. He was the grandfather of Jonathan Chislom and the late Hillary Chislom. 

Mr. Self was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. Willie Oliver Self and Mrs. Ina Carter Self. He was also preceded in death by his siblings Theresa Self, Winston Self, Newell Self, Nowell Self, Harold Self, John Self and Madelle Self Lawrence. Mr. Self had many cousins, nieces, and nephews. He loved his entire family very much.

Visitation  for Mr. Self will be held at Salmon Funeral Home & Crematory at  2:00 PM until 4:00 PM on Sunday, September 27, 2026 and at 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM on Monday, September 28, 2026. A service to celebrate Mr. Self going home will be held at Salmon Funeral Home & Crematory on Monday, September 28, 2026 at 2:00 PM.  Interment will follow at East View Cemetery in Rome.
